“Who amomg the strongs will give me a hand?

No one!

Nobody!

Where can I find the eternal to adhere with my miserable, helpless and terribly lonesome “I”?

Nowhere! Nowhere!”

Leonid Andreyev “The Thought”

Before the publication, Leonid Andreyev gave the story to Maksim Gorky to read.

“It’s a marvelous story”, said Gorky. “Let them dread life, bind up with iron clutches of despair their despicable depravity and insolence, fill up the emptiness of soul with fear and horror! If they can withstand it, they will recover, if not – they will die, disappear!”
